Flat sided sinkers have a variety of uses, but many anglers prefer them for fishing moving water such as fast running rivers or current in bays or estuaries. Around the west coast they are used for fishing rivers or the bay when you want your sinker to remain in contact with the bottom at all times and either just slowly drag or sit completely still.
